Why are new Nike Air Max shoes ( basketball) using a smaller air max unit than what was used in the 90's?

If you look at the old basketball shoes from the mid 90's and look at the new ones there is a huge differnece in size of Air Max Unit. The new ones are not true Air Max. Does anybody know why?

Now the technology is better and Nike doesn't need to make bigger AIR max units. They waste space and are heavier on the foot. With the smaller ones it is lighter and still produces the same results. Remember size doesn't always matter.
